What industry experience do I have?
I hold a degree in Graphic Design, and have over 24 years industry experience as a web designer, graphic designer, and design manager. I’ve worked on and lead a wide range of print, web, and multimedia design briefs: for blue-chip companies, “Top 100” design and marketing agencies, independent startups, charities, the UK Government, and all manner of clients in-between. I’ve even volunteered as a graphic designer at Origin8 Saatchi & Saatchi in Ghana, West Africa.
The majority of my career to date has been as a freelancer and contractor, although I’ve also held multiple full-time positions, ranging from Junior Designer, to Senior Designer, to my most recent full-time roles as Agency Manager and Sales Manager for a UK web design and development agency specialising in digital experiences, marketplaces, portals, and custom applications for both UK and international clients. This role involved managing a team of designers and front-end & back-end developers, plus handling a wide range of prestigious client accounts, as well as leading pitches for new business and running the day-to-day operations of the studio.
I’m highly experienced in every aspect of the design and development process: producing and presenting a pitch; extracting a brief; wireframes; creative design; art direction; copywriting; artwork; production; programming and development; project and account management, as well as leading and presenting international project launches. My knowledge, experience, and expertise in each of these areas and beyond ensures that my work today is highly considered, relevant, and of consistently high quality.
But don’t take my word for it!
Sounds good so far, right? My mum thinks I’m great too — but what about my agency clients?
“The fact that I have consistently hired Russell over recent years says a great deal about his combined ability and his flexibility. He can instantly fill virtually any creative or digital gap caused by capacity issues, leave or illness; but more importantly brings additional creative dimensions to pitches and client work when the opportunity arises. I have included ‘personable’ as a key attribute because bringing freelance experts into creative teams can damage fragile chemistries – but Russell is quietly affable and ego-free; and is quickly accepted because of the quality of his commitment and contribution. Highly recommended.”
“Russell came in at short notice and helped us tremendously to meet some pressing deadlines. His attention to detail and ability to work off his own initiative was a great benefit and allowed him to thrive in our dynamic startup environment. I hope to work with him again in the near future!”
“Russell was a pleasure to work with. We worked together on a new client’s website and it needed to go live on a Friday afternoon. A lot of changes needed to be made in a short period of time and I never thought it would be possible to have it ready on time. Not only did he make every change that needed to be done on time but it was ready well before the deadline.”
